Ecuadorian authorities announced Saturday that they had seized 3.2 tons of cocaine, two tons of which were hidden in containers of bananas destined for Europe.
“Investigations led to the seizure of more than two tons of cocaine in a container from Guayaquil destined for Europe,” the police statement said.
Containers containing a total of one tonne and 213 kilograms of cocaine were also found in another port, in the Guayas region, according to Ecuadorian police.
Last year, the country’s authorities seized 210 tons of drugs – mainly cocaine. This year, the seized drugs have exceeded 100 tons.
According to UN data, in 2020 Ecuador was the third country in the world with the largest seizures of cocaine, behind Colombia and the United States.
