Ecuador and Colombia agreed on Sunday (21) to bilaterally reopen their common border in early December, after it was closed amid the Covid-19 pandemic, and pledged to work together to combat drug trafficking.
The border between the two countries was closed in March 2020 as both governments sought to contain the spread of the coronavirus. The controlled reopening, accompanied by epidemiological measures, will bring greater security and economic activity to the area.
“The opening of the borders means that no Ecuadorian or Colombian family will have to pay criminal groups that charge to cross alternative routes instead of the official ones, which will be opened on December 1,” Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso said in Quito , after a meeting with Colombian President Iván Duque.
During the meeting, Colombia offered support to Ecuador in the fight against drug trafficking.
Ecuador has been hit by a wave of crimes that has increased homicides, which the country’s authorities link to drug trafficking and consumption.
“Ecuador will receive from Colombia everything it needs to fight organized crime,” said Iván Duque.
