Elderly man dies after being swept away by the sea amidst the storm surge in RJ

A 75-year-old man drowned after being swept away by the sea on Leme beach, in the south of Rio de Janeiro, on Tuesday morning (13).

According to the Rio Municipal Health Department, Valeriano Osvalde Andrade Caldas was taken to the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital, also in the south zone, but did not survive and died.

According to the Fire Department, the man was contemplating the sea on Caminho dos Pescadores, at the base of Morro do Leme, when was hit by a wave and thrown against the rocks. He was removed from the scene by beach lifeguards.

On Monday (12), the Navy issued a storm surge warning with waves of up to 4 meters for the coast of Rio de Janeiro. The warning is valid until 9 pm this Wednesday (14).

On social media, Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD) released a video showing waves invading the shoreline in the Copacabana region. The mayor also shared a warning about the sea swell and asked the population to avoid the area.

The Brazilian Navy warned bathers and fishermen and gave some safety recommendations.

  • Do not stay at viewpoints on the shore or in places close to the sea during the storm;
  • Beachgoers must follow the instructions of the Fire Department teams;
  • Fishermen should avoid sailing during the storm surge period;
  • Avoid cycling along the shore if the waves are reaching the cycle path;
  • Do not enter the sea to rescue accident victims
