Elected LGBTQIA+ candidates set record in 2022

A survey by the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) VoteLGBT shows that the 2022 elections had a record number of people from the LGBTQIA+ community elected to the Brazilian legislature. In all, there are 18 parliamentarians, twice as many as in 2018, when nine LGBTQIA+ candidates were elected.

Four candidates secured a seat in the Chamber of Deputies. Among them, the first trans federal deputies in history: Erika Hilton (PSOL – SP) who had 256,902 votes, being the 9th most voted candidate in the state of São Paulo, and Duda Salabert (PDT – MG) the 3rd most voted candidate in Minas General with 208,265 votes.

Another 14 candidates will occupy the state legislative assemblies. According to VoteLGBT, there was a record, too, on gender and race. Among the elected LGBTs, 16 are women and 14 are black. In the Senate, however, no LGBTQIA+ person was elected this Sunday (2).

The NGO VoteLGBT is a non-governmental organization that has been working since 2014 to increase the representation of LGBT+ people in all spaces, especially in politics.

The number of candidacies also hit a record in these elections. In all, 317 LGBTQIA+ people contested this year’s election. The number was more than double that of 2018, when 157 names were mapped by VoteLGBT.
