Windows 11 is slow to copy large files over the network. Microsoft did not find a reason

Microsoft has confirmed an issue affecting computers that are running the Windows 11 2022 Update operating system. It has not yet been added to the list of known issues on the company’s website, but Ned Pyle, Microsoft’s chief program manager on the Windows Server team, has already spoken about it. The problem is associated with a drop in speed when copying large files from any remote computer to a Windows 11 computer.

In particular, when copying files of several gigabytes, throughput is reduced by 40% on systems with Windows 11 2022 Update. Pyle specifically refers to the network protocol as SMB, although he notes that the problem is not related to it, since it can even affect the slowdown when copying local files on the computer itself.

To avoid this problem, a Microsoft representative suggests that users run the copy using the robocopy or xcopy command-line utilities with the /J option. He gives an example of a command where you need to specify the correct path and folder / file name:

  • robocopy \\someserver\someshare c:\somefolder somefile.ned /J

You can also use other file copy tools like Fast Copy, TeraCopy or CopyMaestro to avoid slowdowns. Pyle confirms that this problem does not occur on all other systems. At the moment, Microsoft is trying to find the cause. As soon as a solution is found, the company will release a fix.
