Electricity in Lviv has been “completely restored” after missile attacks on Tuesday night, the city’s deputy mayor Serhiy Kiral told reporters. CNN on Wednesday (4).
Kiral said three cruise missiles hit three power plants in Lviv on Tuesday, leaving them “heavily damaged”. Two other missiles that hit western Ukraine and the Lviv region “were shot down” by the air defense system, Kiral added. Another hit the Transcarpathian region.
In total, there were “18 or 19” cruise missile attacks “fired from the Caspian Sea by Russian strategic bombers” heading towards Ukraine, he said, “probably Tu-295 or Tu-160.”
“There have also been interruptions to our pumping stations, which are supplying the city with water,” said Kiral.
“This is interesting because, in fact, the water supply was not interrupted and this is a result of some of the contingency plans for the resilience of the city that we had before the war,” he added.
“We bought the diesel generators, and those diesel generators yesterday helped to continue to provide water not only to the citizens, but also to the firefighters, who were trying to put out the fire,” Kiral said.
The Ukrainian military said Tuesday night’s Russian missile attacks were designed to destroy transport infrastructure.
Cruise missiles hit at least half a dozen targets in central and western Ukraine in what appears to have been an attempt to hamper the transit of military equipment and supplies. The Ukrainian railway system reported that more than 40 trains were delayed after the attacks.
Kiral said he did not believe the attacks on infrastructure would affect supplies from the west.
“But it could affect Ukrainian commodity exports, which is very critical at these times of the year because we need to remove more than 5 million tons of grain to be ready for the new harvest,” he said.
