Elizabeth II’s funeral ceremonies value British crown, says professor

the funeral of queen elizabeth II takes place this Monday (19), at Westminster Abbey, in London. The queen’s coffin is in the Palace of Westminster where it receives visits from the public and international leaders and authorities.

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), alongside First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro, visited the queen’s coffin in Westminster Hall, this Sunday (18).

In an interview with CNN professor of international relations Marcus Vinicius de Freitas, from the University of Foreign Affairs of China, said that the funeral ceremonies of Elizabeth II value the British crown.

“All this symbology is, first of all, for the English to remember the crown and the symbol of the crown. In monarchical countries, the emperor or the king, when observed in constitutional monarchies, has a symbolic power, which is what Brazil called at the time the Moderating power, which allows the powers to act in a more harmonious way, even by counseling that he gives”, says Freitas.

“All these things that we are seeing are precisely, first of all, to remind the British of the importance of the monarchy, which is a living institution”, he adds.

Continuity of the legacy

The expert believes that one of the challenges of King Charles III at the head of the British throne is to continue the legacy of the monarchy in the country.

“Charles gradually molded this process and reigned for a few years to ensure mainly the continuity of the dynastic line. We know that the Windsor family comes from Germany, so they had to make some adjustments throughout history, name changes, in the way they act, precisely to ensure that the House of Hanover, which has been on the throne for over 300 years, continues in power”, he explains.

The funeral is expected to be attended by around 2,000 people. This Monday, the ceremony will last an hour, ending at noon, after a series of protocols, such as reading lessons, a moment of prayer and blessing. Toward the end, around 11:55 am, the melody of “Last Post” will be sung, followed by two minutes of silence across the UK.

Still in London, the queen’s coffin will be carried in procession to the Arch of Wellington. From there, you will be transferred to the official royal vehicle so you can continue your journey to Windsor Castle.
