Elliniko: A green and sustainable development

An ambitious pioneering decontamination project, unique in Greece and one of the largest ever carried out in Europe, was launched by Lamda Development.

The goal of this innovative project is to eliminate any possible source of pollution from the surface, soil and groundwater in the great work of Elliniko.

The project of decontamination of the entire space where the investment of Elliniko is implemented, is indicative of Lamda’s philosophy for “green”, sustainable development, which is the core of the emblematic renovation of the former airport and fully serves the principles of sustainability and protection environment.

The process of remediation of soil and groundwater in renovations of old airports is an international practice.

However, the project that is in progress by Lamda Development in the area of the former International Airport, is considered unique due to its size and the environmentally friendly methods used.

The characteristic of this innovative project is that it chooses not to remove any amount of soil.

The contaminated soil will be rehabilitated either in the bioremediation cell manufactured within Elliniko, or by the method of bioaeration and in-situ treatment.

An additional element is that any potential source of pollution will be removed, treated with innovative methods and used as fuel or raw material in industries, further reducing the environmental footprint of the project.

The total cost of the work will be fully covered by Lamda. The contractor of the project, which started in April and is expected to be completed in one year, is the consortium of the internationally recognized companies Antipollution and Intergeo.
