In a major move closely linked to its emissions reduction strategy, HELLENIC PETROLEUM Group has entered into an agreement with Neste for the commercial distribution of Neste Sustainable Aviation Fuel TM (SAF) on flights by AEGEAN, the leading air carrier in GREECE.
The HELLENIC PETROLEUM Group, through its subsidiary EKO, will ensure the supply of SAF on AEGEAN flights departing from the hub of Thessaloniki Airport “Macedonia”. Flights from Athens International Airport are expected to follow shortly.
This important agreement combines HELLENIC PETROLEUM Group’s expertise in the supply and distribution of jet fuels with Neste’s expertise in the production and supply of sustainable aviation fuels to provide a safe and reliable supply of SAF in Greece. SAF is globally recognized as the most feasible option for reducing aviation emissions in the short term.
The agreement is in line with the HELLENIC PETROLEUM Group’s strategic goal to become a low-carbon energy solutions provider and reduce its carbon footprint by 50% by 2030, while enabling airlines and airports to proactively align with upcoming targets European Union SAF until 2025.
Konstantinos Panas, General Manager Supply & Sales of Hellenic Petroleum RSSOPP commented: “Our collaboration with Neste, a world leader in renewable and sustainable fuel sources, is an important part of the implementation of our strategic plan “Vision 2025″ for the energy transformation of Our Group. This initiative is one to follow for the gradual increased use of sustainable fuels and we are proud to work with Neste to help AEGEAN and the Greek aviation industry reduce their carbon footprint.”
Jonathan Wood, Vice President Europe, Renewable Aviation at Neste commented: “We are delighted to be working with HELLENIC PETROLEUM to make our Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel available in Greece and the AEGEAN. We share the ambition to contribute to the reduction of aviation’s carbon footprint and we are committed to working together to achieve this. Neste is playing its part by increasing SAF capacity to 1.5 million tonnes by the end of 2023 – more than the total pre-Covid aviation fuel demand in Greece. We must act now – SAF is a key and proven solution with clear climate benefits and is already available today.”
Neste MY Sustainable Aviation FuelTM is produced from sustainably sourced waste, 100% renewable resources and residual raw materials such as used cooking oil and waste animal fat. In its neat form and over its life cycle, Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%* compared to using fossil jet fuel.
