The Photovoltaic Park of the HELLENIC PETROLEUM Group in the region of Kozani, which is an inspirational project for the energy transformation of the country and marks the rapid transition of the ELPE Group to new more “clean” forms of energy, was inaugurated at noon by the Minister. Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
According to a relevant announcement, it is the largest RES project in operation to date in Greece and in the wider region of the SE Mediterranean, but also one of the largest parks with photovoltaics in Europe with a total installed capacity of 204.3 MW. It is estimated that it will produce 350 GWh of energy per year, while it will cover the needs of 75,000 households with zero emission energy. The total investment amounted to € 130 million, with a significant benefit for the national economy, but also the region of W. Macedonia, as it created over 350 jobs during construction, while it will maintain dozens of direct and indirect jobs during the duration of operation, most of which will be covered by the local community.
The construction of the park, which is the largest in Europe with double-sided photovoltaic panels (bifacial modules) and has the latest generation automation system for monitoring and production control (Energy Management System), was completed on time, despite the difficulties caused by the pandemic. The main contractor of the project was the company JUWI, while the supervision of the construction was undertaken by the company ASPROFOS, a subsidiary of the ELPE Group, which follows the strategic shift of the Group, developing know-how in this new market.
Welcoming the Prime Minister and the other official guests, the CEO of HELLENIC PETROLEUM, Mr. Andreas Siamisis, stressed: “This project reflects in practice our decision and our commitment to a new, We have made it a priority to create the ELPE of the coming decades, overcoming the inertia that usually characterizes large organizations with a long and successful history. We are accelerating the energy transformation and supporting the transition to advanced and zero-emission forms of energy, but at the same time modernizing our successful core business.It is particularly encouraging for us to see the but also of of our shareholders and markets, with this new strategy. I thank those who worked and helped in the implementation of this project, which today is even more important for ensuring the country’s energy efficiency and access to cheap and green energy for consumers. At HELLENIC PETROLEUM Group, based on the strategic plan “Vision 2025”, we are implementing one of the largest investment programs in Greece, aiming at a drastic reduction of the environmental footprint by 50% by 2030, in order to contribute substantially to tackling the crisis.
A detailed description of the Kozani PV park, the advanced technology used and its specialized construction work, was addressed to the attendees by the General Manager of Strategic Planning and New Activities of the ELPE Group, Mr. George Alexopoulos, who pointed out the and, of course, the local community in the completion of the project despite the adverse conditions due to pandemic. As he noted, “in a very short period of time ELPE acquired an installed capacity of 300 MW of RES and have set as a medium-term goal 1GW by the end of 2026 and the development of a diversified, strong project portfolio, over 2 GW in operation by 2030.
