The heads of state and government of the US, Joe Biden, France, Emmanuel Macron, Germany, Olaf Scholz, Britain, Rishi Sunak, Italy, Georgia Meloni, Canada, Justin Trudeau and Japan, Fumio Kishida, began meeting shortly before 03:00 (Greece time), while the leaders of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, the president of the European Council, Charles Michel and the president of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, are also present. Attendees did not express themselves at this meeting, which is ongoing behind closed doors.
Reuters news agency notes that this emergency meeting was organized at the initiative of Joe Biden.
All participating states, except Japan, are NATO members, as is Poland.
If Moscow is found responsible for the missile strike, Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s founding treaty, under which an attack on any member state is treated as an attack on all, could be triggered and consultations could begin on a possible military reaction.
Asked by reporters if he wanted to share what he knew about yesterday’s incident in Poland before the talks began, Mr. Biden responded with a one-word “no.” When asked if Russia was responsible, he did not answer.
