In some ways, the 2024 Emmys feel like the 2023 Emmys, which were handed out in January, with three series leading the way, sweeping the awards in the drama, comedy and limited series categories. Last time, they were Succession, The Bear And Beef. This time Shogun in the drama category, Baby Reindeer for comedy, although the comedy categories have been dominated by both The Bearwho has won a number of awards for acting and directing, both from Hackswhich won awards for best actress, best screenplay and best comedy itself.
So Shogun wins Best Drama Series, with Best Actor in a Drama (Hiroyuki Sanada for his portrayal of the imposing feudal leader Lord Yoshii Toranaga) and Best Actress (Anna Sawai for her role as Lady Mariko). A hat trick of Emmys that was matched by the night’s big winner in the limited series categories: Baby Reindeer, a surprise hit on Netflix written by and starring the Scottish comedian Richard Gadd. Gadd himself won for writing, producing and starring in the show, which is based on his own personal experience. And the star of the dark comedy, Jessica Gunning, in competition in the supporting actress category, even though her character, the stalker Martha, is the driving force behind Baby Reindeer, he beat big names like Dakota Fanning, Diane Lane And Lily Gladstone and took home an Emmy of her own.
What happened to The Bearwinner of the last edition? The second season seems to have been well received, with 23 nominations, second only to Shogun. Jeremy Allen White won the award for best actor in a comedy for the second time in a row, and his Emmy was paired with statuettes for his guest appearances Ebon Moss Bachrach And Liza Colon Zayas. But his companion Hello Edebiri, who this year went from supporting actress to leading lady, was beaten by Jean Smart, who won another Emmy for his breakthrough work in Hacks. The same Hacks also won best comedy, perhaps galvanizing a faction of Emmy watchers and voters who for years have wondered why The Bear be classified as a comedy.
