THE’World’s oldest man has died at 112. As reported by the BBCJohn Alfred Tinniswood passed away on Monday, November 25, at the nursing home where he resided in Southport, England.
“His last day was filled with music and love,” his family said in a statement reported by Sky News. «John always loved to say thank you. So, on his behalf, thank you to everyone who cared for him over the years: the workers at Hollies Care Home, his GPs, nurses, therapists and all the NHS staff.”
Tinniswood was born in Liverpool on 21 August 1912, the same year the Titanic sank. In April, the Guinness World Recordss had officially recognized him as the oldest man in the world, successor to Juan Vicente Pérez, a 114-year-old Venezuelan who passed away in April. From the age of 100, to the age of 110, John Tinniswood received every year a birthday card from Queen Elizabeth IIwho was almost 14 years his junior.
In an interview about his extraordinary longevity, Tinniswood said: «Honestly, I don’t feel any different. It doesn’t thrill me to be that old. Maybe this is exactly the secret: I take life as it comes, without getting nervous. I don’t think I have any special tricks. When I was young I was quite active, I walked a lot. But I’m no different from the others, not at all.”
The secret to his longevity, according to him, was “pure luck.” However, suggested moderation in all things: “If you drink too much, eat too much, walk too much, do too much of anything, you will eventually suffer.” He himself has always maintained a healthy lifestyle, without smoking and without exaggerating with his diet (but no one could take away his portion of fish & chipson Friday). Tinniswood has also always maintained a passion for football: He supported Liverpool, his hometown team.
The family remembered his many qualities: «He was intelligent, decisive, courageous, calm even in difficult situations, good at mathematics and an excellent conversationalist».
During the Second World War, Tinniswood put his accounting skills to good use serving in Royal Army Pay Corpsand then work at the Royal Mail. Later it was accountant for multinationals Shell And BPuntil his retirement in 1972. During his retirement, he dedicated himself to volunteering at Blundellsands United Reform Churchwhere he was also a preacher.
In 1942 married Blodwen, whom he met at a ball. The two remained together for 44 years, until her death in 1986. Tinniswood leaves behind her daughter Susan, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildrenas he reports Sky News.
