Erdogan and his ‘friends’ dominate electricity distribution: 14 14 billion jobs

Ten Turkish electricity distribution companies with close ties to the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) have been awarded public tenders worth ,4 14.4 billion over the past 10 years, the Birgün newspaper reported.

Of those 10 companies, four belong to holdings referred to as the “gang of five” by the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP).

The highest amount of state funds went to the Dicle Electricity Distribution Company, totaling 8 2.8 billion. Between 2014-2021, the company was awarded a total of 308 tenders for electricity by various public bodies.

Dicle Electricity Distribution Company was followed by Aydem Electricity Company. Between 2014-2021, in a total of 585 public tenders, 2.4 billion pounds were awarded to the company.

Third on the list was the Cengiz-Kolin Boğaziçi Electricity Company, which won 37 public tenders between 2014-2021, totaling 3 2.3 billion. The company is owned by Cengiz Holding and Kolin Construction, which are among the five heterogeneous business groups that have benefited from multibillion-dollar contracts for major infrastructure projects during Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s AKP rule.

Yağmur Group Electricity Company came in fourth on the list, winning 133 public tenders totaling 1, 1.6 billion. Among the company’s management are Abdurrahman Topbaş, Ömer Faruk Topbaş and Ömer Faruk Damar.

Fifth on the list was Cengiz Electricity Company, a subsidiary of Cengiz Holding. Between 2012-2021, the company received 92 tenders totaling 1, 1.1 billion.

Overall, these public tenders – along with dozens of others – paint a picture of portfolio companies that have benefited greatly from their close relationship with Erdogan and the AKP.
