THE Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke today via video at an international conference on Brussels to raise funds after last month’s devastating earthquake. “Whatever her financial situation, it is impossible for one country to cope alone a disaster of this magnitude,” said the Turkish president.
The president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyenopening the conference, announced that the Commission would provide 1 billion euros in reconstruction aid to Turkey. Furthermore, 108 million euros will be given to humanitarian aid in Syria after the earthquake that killed more than 56,000 people in these two countries.
What is the situation now?
At Syriadamages are estimated at $8.9 billion from the UN and the cost of emergency repairs to 14.8 billion.
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) estimated its “total economic burden earthquake damage” in Turkey at $103.6 billion and said this amounts to 9% of the country’s estimated GDP for 2023.
The UNDP had lamented a fortnight ago the little response to the UN’s emergency appeal in mid-February to raise more than a billion dollars for Turkey and almost $400 million for Syria. For Turkey, the funding so far only amounts to 16% of the amount the UN appealed to be raised.
