Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that he will ask his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in a phone call later that he and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky take a step towards resolving the issues over the Donbass region and Crimea.
Speaking to reporters in Istanbul, Erdogan said he would hold the call with Putin at 1 pm (from London) and renew an offer to welcome Russian and Ukrainian leaders for peace talks. The Turk said Zelensky was warm after the call on Thursday (31).
Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said his country would be grateful to Turkey if it could help organize a meeting between Russian and Ukrainian leaders.
The Turkish president has taken a leading role in negotiations between the two countries. The round of negotiations held in Istanbul last Tuesday (29) brought the Russian and Ukrainian sides closer “to a dialogue”, as defined by Zelensky’s chief of staff speaking to CNN.
Another interlocutor of the Russian president, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, said that Putin still did not see the moment as favorable for a ceasefire.
