The European Union has started accession negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania, announced the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
“It is a historic moment,” said the president of the Commission. “This is what your citizens have been waiting for for so long and they deserve it,” he added.
North Macedonia has been a candidate country since 2005 and Albania since 2014.
Rama’s “thank you” to Macron, Leyen, Merkel
Ursula von der Leyen, Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel were among those thanked by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama for their help in starting accession negotiations for his country.
“Thank you to the President of the European Commission who fought for both” for the EU and for the Western Balkans, for all the member states and “for us” said Mr. Rama.
He continued with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, saying “without her we wouldn’t be here today. It was her birthday too and I want to wish her the best.” At the same time, he noted that “we would not be here without the extra effort of the French President, Emmanuel Macron and his team who worked on the last proposal that paved the way, unblocking an absurd situation”. Edi Rama also addressed the people of Albania pointing out that he did not give up the dream of following the European path.
“Thanks to the Albanian people we could be strong despite three very complicated years, on the one hand with the refusals of the European Council, the earthquake, the pandemic, the war, which made the perfect storm, but made us stronger,” he noted.
