EU calls on Israel to escalate violence in Jerusalem

THE European Union He called on the Israeli authorities today to take “urgent” action to “escalate” tensions in Jerusalem, in a statement issued by the representative of the head of European diplomacy.

“Violence and incitement are unacceptable and the perpetrators on all sides must be held accountable,” said Josep Borrell.

“The European Union calls on the (Israeli) authorities to act urgently to de-escalate the current tensions in Jerusalem,” he added.

At least 175 Palestinians and six Israeli police were injured on Friday, most of them in the Mosque Square – called the Temple Mount by the Jews – in the most serious clashes in recent years in occupied East Jerusalem.

“Political, religious and community leaders on all sides must show restraint and responsibility and do everything possible to calm this explosive situation,” he said.

The EU also described the evictions of Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarah and other neighborhoods in East Jerusalem as “very worrying”.

“These actions are illegal under international humanitarian law and they only succeed in fostering tensions in the field,” the spokesman warned.

The protests are the most violent in Jerusalem since the clashes that injured 125 people in late April, but also since the incidents related to the transfer, in 2018, of the US embassy to the disputed city, even by those of the summer of 2017 that were associated with the placement by Israel metal detectors at the entrance to Mosque Square, the third holiest site in Islam.
