EU: Member State holds us hostage over sanctions, Lithuania complains – What Borrell says

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis today denounced that EU plans to impose an embargo on Russian oil imports were being blocked by a member state.

“The whole Union is being held hostage by one Member State (…) we have to agree, we can not remain hostage,” Landsbergis said as he attended a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

Hungary is the only country opposed to imposing an embargo on Russian oil, according to European diplomats.

Borrell: We will do our best to unblock the situation

The strong support for the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO was expressed by the High Representative of the EU, Josep Borrell, attending the EU-Canada meeting that will take place before the Council of Foreign Ministers in Brussels. He also expressed the hope that the opposition of some NATO countries on the issue will be overcome.

Josef Borrell also said that there was concern about the consequences of the war in Ukraine and spoke of a “deep economic crisis”.

“We must join forces to explain to the world that this is not because of sanctions, but because of the war itself,” he said.

Regarding the sixth package of sanctions, the High Representative pointed out that “we are 27 and I have to convince the 27. Among them are some who have more problems than others”.

“We will do our best to unblock the situation,” Borel said, adding that he could not give any assurances.
