EU: Persona non grata 19 officials of the Permanent Mission of Russia to the Union

LAST UPDATE: 17:57

Nineteen members of Russia’s Permanent Mission to the EU are personae non gratae “for participating in activities contrary to their diplomatic status”, according to a decision by EU High Representative Josep Borrell, the Commission spokesman of Foreign Affairs Peter Stano. These individuals will have to leave Belgium.

The Secretary General of the European External Action Service, Stefano Sannino, summoned the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the European Union, Vladimir Chizov, in the afternoon to inform him of this decision, notes Mr. Stano.

“The European Union has taken this step in response to the illegal and subversive actions of certain members of the Russian Mission against the interests and security of the EU and the EU Member States. These actions violate the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic relationships, “he says.

At the same time, he points out that the privileges and immunities of these Russian citizens will be revoked and they will be forced to leave Belgium.

Peter Stano emphasizes that the decision comes at a time of the alleged atrocities that took place by the Russian armed forces in some of the occupied Ukrainian cities that have now been liberated, especially Butsa.

“The European Union stands in full solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people and will continue to provide all possible assistance, in coordination with its international partners,” he said.
