The leaders of the countries of the European Union can talk the request of Russia that “unfriendly countries” will pay in rubles for Russian gas at a two-day summit starting tomorrow in Brussels, a senior European official has said.
“This can be discussed,” the source said. He added that leaders could also consider whether Moscow’s request could threaten the effectiveness of EU sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that his country would no longer accept payments in dollars or euros for gas supplies to the European Union and gave Russian authorities a week to work out the new system in rubles.
