Europe hits record for Covid-19 cases on Christmas Eve

This Friday (24), the United Kingdom announced a new record of 122,186 new cases of Covid-19, up from 119,789 on Thursday.

British government data showed there were 137 new deaths in 28 days after testing positive Covid-19, down from 147 on Thursday, bringing the total during the pandemic to 147,857.

Italy also registered a record: there were 44,595 new cases of coronavirus just yesterday — an increase of more than 70% in just one week, with the infectious variant Ômicron starting to manifest itself across the country.

Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza said mask use would again be mandatory outdoors and ordered people to wear the most protective Ffp2 face masks on public transport and in public places such as theaters, cinemas and sporting events.

In addition, outdoor concerts and events will be banned in Italy until January 31, and discos and clubs will have to close their doors by that date, in an effort to avoid mass socializing during the holiday period.

Like Italy, France also reached record Covid-19 cases yesterday: 91,608 cases were registered.

Fourth dose in Austria

Amidst the increase in the number of cases, the Austrian government is already talking about a fourth dose of vaccine to contain Covid-19 in the country. According to guidance from the National Vaccination Council of Austria, announced yesterday, the countries must

offer some healthcare professionals and other key professionals a fourth dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

“In view of an imminent wave of Ômicron, (a fourth vaccination) can be offered in high-risk areas (eg, exposed healthcare personnel) and in systemically critical areas from six months after the third vaccination,” said the advice.

About 1,084 patients were in the ICU on Thursday, the KDCA said. South Korea also reported 56 new deaths in Covid, bringing the national death toll to 5,071.

By midnight local time on Friday, 85.5% of the population had received their first dose of Covid-19 vaccine and 82.3% of the population had received a second dose.
