In the midst of Ukraine’s war, the European Union is preparing for a complete interruption of Russian gas supplies to the continent. Among the measures to be adopted is the burning of coal – the “villain” of carbon emissions.
“Energy security will be prioritized to the detriment of global and even local environmental issues”, analyzes professor and engineering researcher at UFRJ, Marcos Freitas, in an interview with CNN Radio .
According to him, the “fight against climate change is a struggle in the medium and long term, exte a negative situation in Europe, which will need heat to heat homes and even industries”, even with the lower supply of natural gas from Russia.
“Germany is a symbolic case of dependence on gas, and it can actually use coal to replace it. In addition to coal, they also have the option of resuming nuclear plants that have been deactivated,” he added.
A third way is the methane tankers, which, according to the professor, are the ideal solution, since “it injects the gas into the existing network and distributes it, this is common, even we use it here in Brazil when we do not have water in the hydroelectric plants”. .”
In the opinion of Marcos Freitas, the use of coal can meet the European need, which will come in October and November, the region’s winter season.
Even so, he does not rule out the possibility of rationing. “Right now, you can hold on, but you have to consider stocks, sources of supply and the need to enact energy security plans, such as Germany”.
