European Commission awaits details before reacting to Trump’s tariffs

The European Commission said on Monday that, in order to protect the interests of the European Union, it will react to the announcement of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to impose tariffs on metals, but indicated that it will not respond until it has clarification about the measurements.

Trump said on Sunday that he will introduce new 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports to the US, in another large climb of his country’s commercial policy reform.

The commission said it had not received any official notification about additional rates on the block products and will not respond to “vacant ads” without details or clarification in writing.

“The European Union sees no justification for the imposition of tariffs on its exports. We will react to protecting the interests of European companies, workers and consumers against unjustified measures, ”the commission said in a statement.

Trump’s measure, if confirmed, would mirror its action in the first term, when I imposed 25% tariffs on the steel of many countries and 10% tariffs on aluminum. For the European Union, this covered 6.4 billion euros in exports.

The block responded in 2018 with an initial set of tariffs about 2.8 billion euros in US products and planned to add another 3.6 billion euros from US products after three years.

Trump’s predecessor, Joe Biden, and the European Union agreed to suspend US tariffs and the bloc’s countermeasures.

The suspension of US tariffs represented a quota of 3.3 million steel metric tons and 384,000 tons of aluminum from the European Union producers, based on historical averages.

European diplomats said it would make it more sense to reapply the contracted if Trump continues the import tariffs.
