European Medicines Agency launches Russian, Chinese cyber attack on coronavirus vaccines

Russian secret services and Chinese spies are said to be involved cyber attacks which took place last year against him European Medicines Agency (EMA), according to information from the Dutch newspaper “De Volkskrant”, which are rebroadcast by the German BILD.

According to the newspaper, EMA, which is based in Amsterdam, reported the case of a cyber attack last December, during which documents related to vaccines and drugs against Covid-19 were stolen and leaked on the Internet.

Coreper has already started an investigation, in cooperation with the Dutch and European competent authorities, which, however, have not yet borne fruit.

The Dutch newspaper, however, writes today that the European Medicines Agency became a target of Chinese spies as early as 2020, while later it was attacked by Russian hackers. The Chinese, according to the same information, gained access by hacking the system of a German university, while last fall the Russians took advantage of some security gaps of Coreper itself and, sending an e-mail to selected executives of the Organization, allegedly against their collaborator, install the malware, through which they monitored all the mail for almost a month. Among the documents hackers gained access to were confidential notes from BioNTech and Pfizer about the coronavirus vaccine.

De Volkskrant points out, however, that the Russians’ interest was mainly focused on the EU vaccination strategy and the vaccine chosen by each country.
