Eurozone composite PMI drops to 48.9 in August, lowest in 18 months

The eurozone composite purchasing managers’ index (PMI), which encompasses both manufacturing and services, fell from 49.9 in July to 48.9 in August, hitting an 18-month low. and with the result below 50 showing that activity continues to contract, according to a final survey released this Monday (5) by S&P Global.

The final August figure was below the preliminary reading of 49.2.

The Eurozone Services PMI, meanwhile, decreased from 51.2 to 49.8 in the same period, touching the lowest level in 17 months and also coming below the initial calculation of 50.2.

Germany

Germany’s services PMI dropped from 49.7 in July to 47.7 in August, with a reading below 50 showing that activity remains in contraction and at its lowest level since February 2021, according to a final survey released by S&P Global.

The definitive reading for August was below the previous estimate and the projection of analysts consulted by the The Wall Street Journalof 48.2 in both cases.

The German composite PMI, which encompasses services and industry, fell from 48.1 to 46.9 in the same period, reaching the lowest level in 27 months.

The final figure was also below the initial estimate of 47.6.

UK

The UK services PMI dropped from 52.6 in July to 50.9 in August, hitting an 18-month low, according to final data released on Monday by S&P Global in partnership with CIPS.

The definitive August number was below the preliminary reading of 52.5. The British composite PMI, which encompasses services and industry, decreased from 52.1 to 49.6 in the same period, remaining below the barrier of 50 that indicates a contraction in activity and also at the lowest level in 18 months.

Also in this case, the initial estimate had been higher, at 50.9.
