At least two people have been killed and five injured in a gas explosion at a nine-storey apartment building in the city of Noginsk, about 50 kilometers east of the Russian capital, the Ifax news agency reported today, citing emergency services.
“According to preliminary data, five people were injured and two were killed, a man and a woman,” Interfax quoted regional official Anna Tertichnaya as saying.
The second and third floors and partially the fourth floor collapsed as a result of the explosion.
According to a spokesman for the Ministry of Health, two of the injured are children and all the injured have been taken to a hospital in Noginsk.
Moscow Region Health Minister Svetlana Strigunkova told local television that none of the injured being treated “had serious, life-threatening injuries.”
The blast damaged 24 apartments in the building.
Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murasko has said he will make sure everyone affected by the accident receives the help they need.
