Extratropical Cyclone Causes Wind in Southeast Brazil

A large extratropical cyclone is moving over the ocean off the coast of southeastern Brazil. The phenomenon influences the climatic conditions of the region from this Wednesday (17).

Although the system tends to move away from the country, it causes strong winds over the ocean surface, which also make the sea rough, according to Climatempo. As a result, the Brazilian Navy has issued an alert for undertows on the Southeast coast valid until 21:00 next Friday (19).

“From Ilhabela, on the coast of São Paulo, to Linhares, in Espírito Santo, there are conditions for waves between 2.5 and 3 meters”, says the Brazilian meteorology company. An alert was also issued by the Brazilian Navy for the possibility of strong wind in the coastal area between Maricá, in Rio de Janeiro, and Vitória, in Espírito Santo. In this case, the report is valid until 21:00 this Thursday (18).

Petrobras Platforms

Since Tuesday afternoon (16), Petrobras oil platforms located in the Campos basin, in Rio de Janeiro, began to register strong gusts of wind caused by the extratropical cyclone.

According to Climatempo, the most intense gusts occur on the Albacora platform, where they reached speeds between 60 km/h and 80 km/h. Since the dawn of this Wednesday, however, the wind is even stronger, with frequent gusts between 70 and 85 km/h. Around 12:30 am, however, a gust reached 92 km/h and around 1 am, another gust reached 103 km/h.

According to the Brazilian meteorology company, for the north coast of Rio de Janeiro and the Lagos region, the forecast is for gusts of 50 to 65 km/h.

Climatempo also warns that most of the clouds in this cyclone are over the sea, but some of them reach the coast, and may cause rain showers. “That’s what is planned for Rio de Janeiro this Wednesday. But the rain that occurs will be of little intensity and there is no reason for alerts”, projects the Brazilian meteorology company.
