FAB opens Canoas air base for commercial flights and helps Rio Grande do Sul

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) announced the opening of the Canoas air base, in Rio Grande do Sul, for commercial flight operations. The measure aims to meet the demand left by the closure of Salgado Filho Airport, in Porto Alegre, which was flooded due to the heavy rains that hit the State.

Phased operation

On Wednesday (08), the base will receive a flight from the airline Azul bringing around three tons of donations. On Thursday (09), five flights will be carried out, four from airlines and one from the FAB itself with a KC-30, transporting supplies.

From Friday (10), the Canoas air base will begin the repatriation of gauchos who were isolated due to the floods, receiving flights with passengers.

Donation collection

Brigadier Daniel Cavalcanti, FAB spokesperson, reported that the institution has already collected around 500 tons of donations, including drinking water, non-perishable food, mattresses and blankets. He highlighted the population’s spirit of solidarity in the “All United for the South” campaign.

Donations are being received at air bases in Brasília, São Paulo and Galeão (RJ), organized and transported to Canoas by FAB aircraft.

The expectation is that the materials will quickly reach the affected population.

The reopening of Salgado Filho Airport does not yet have a forecast, as it will depend on the assessment of weather conditions and water drainage in the region.

The FAB states that safety will be the primary factor in resuming operations.
