Facebook says it will disable facial recognition for “lack of clear rules”

Facebook announced on Tuesday (2) that its facial recognition system will no longer work. This way, people who have activated the tool will no longer be automatically recognized in photos and videos.

According to the network, more than a billion individual facial recognition models will be deleted — or more than a third of active Facebook users. The company says the change is the biggest ever made in the face recognition segment in the technology’s history.

“We need to weigh positive use cases for facial recognition with society’s growing concerns, especially as regulators still need to provide clear rules,” the network said in a statement.

The network also points out that the change will affect the Automatic Alternate Text (AAT), which creates image descriptions for the blind and visually impaired. “After this change, the descriptions of AAT will no longer include the names of people recognized in the photos, but will function normally in another way,” he says in a note.

The removal will be implemented globally and should be completed by December.

The announcement comes while Facebook is under intense scrutiny from regulators and lawmakers over user safety and a wide range of abuses on its platforms.
