Family of missing Brazilian believes he is a Hamas hostage

The sister of the Brazilian who disappeared after the attacks in Israel, on October 7, was received this Thursday (30) by the Brazilian ambassador Frederico Meyer, in Tel Aviv.

The Facebook post from the Brazilian embassy in Israel features a photo of Mary Shohat and the text: “The Brazilian Ambassador to Israel met this morning with the sister of the only Brazilian hostage in Gaza”.

Michel Nisenbaum, 59, who is also an Israeli citizen, has not been in contact with relatives since the day Hamas attacked Israeli towns near the Gaza Strip border.

Nisenbaum’s family is being monitored and updated by Israeli government representatives. “We have official support. Two people are in charge of our family and help us with everything we need,” said Shohat.

“We were told that it is almost 100% certain that he is among the hostages, because his computer was located in Gaza. One of Michel’s daughters received a call from terrorists on his phone.”

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was informed about the disappearance.

“We are in very bad shape. We have no news of him. Our nerves are exploding,” said the sister.

“He suffers from diabetes and Khron’s disease and needs medication. So far we have not received any news about him.”

The committee set up by relatives of Israelis held captive in Gaza included Nisenbaum on the list of hostages. The Israeli Army works with the hypothesis that the Brazilian is a hostage. Israel’s government committee, which deals with the hostages’ families, did not respond to questions from the CNN about the Nisenbaum situation.

Mary Shohat, the Brazilian’s sister, appealed to President Lula to intercede with Qatari authorities, who mediate talks between Israel and Hamas.

“I hope you talk about the hostages and do something to find out where my brother is and that I can do something to bring my brother back, and maybe other hostages as well.”

She has already spoken to the Brazilian president via videoconference and says “he promised to help”.

“If Michel is not a Hamas hostage, we want to know where he is,” added Shohat.

Nisenbaum was born in Niterói and immigrated to Israel at the age of 12. He is a computer technician in the town of Sderot, a kilometer from the Gaza Strip. He is divorced, has two daughters, five grandchildren and the family is expecting the birth of their sixth grandchild in December.
