Father’s Day canceled, the manager: “I did it for children who don’t have a father”

The laboratory for the father’s Day it was canceled by the didactic director of a childhood school in Viareggio. The executive said she did it to avoid discrimination against children who don’t have a father. However, some of the other parents protested and the controversy reached the national news.

Director Barbara Caterini explained to the newspaper The nation that five or six parents had gone «to complain because they didn’t find it right that on that day their children, who didn’t have a father, were excluded from that activity and were therefore directed elsewhere. I found their complaints shareable, because a laboratory organized in this way is discriminatory against those who do not have a father. Therefore, another activity will have to be organized in a different way, in which all the children can participate”.

Again the principal explained that society and sensitivities have changed. “We have to realize that we live in a different society than 50 years ago. There is no longer a model family. Today there are open and particular situations that must be respected and protected. Especially from a school».

The parents of other children, on the other hand, speak of «una party program from the beginning of the school year and a moment awaited with trepidation by many children, to be able to share the laboratory with their fathers». And again: «There are also families in which the father has little time to devote to his children for work reasons and that was an important moment for him and for his son».

Riccardo ZucconiViareggio deputy of the Brothers of Italy spoke on the canceled Father’s Day: «We believe this cancellation is groundless: the school must be inclusive, but without this translating into homologation. For children who miss their dad, this celebration does not take anything away or add much, since they have always been much more understanding and sincere than adults. Let’s rather say that no one thinks instead of all those dads who organized themselves in time with work or who would have been present even as separated fathers, but who still keep the contact alive despite the difficulties. It seems rather a hasty decision that could in the future lead to the cancellation of other family occasions: Mother’s Day, Easter, Christmas, gradually undermining the entire heritage of value traditions, in the face of an untruthful inclusiveness».
