FDA authorizes emergency use of Moderna and Pfizer vaccines for 6-month-old babies

THE Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a US agency similar to the anvisa , approved the emergency use of Pfizer and Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccines for babies from 6 months of age. The announcement was made this Friday (17).

“Many parents, caregivers and doctors are waiting for a vaccine for younger children and this action will help protect children as young as 6 months of age. As we’ve seen with older age groups, we expect vaccines for younger children to provide protection against the more serious outcomes of Covid-19, such as hospitalization and death,” said FDA Commissioner Robert M. Califf.

“You can have confidence in the safety and effectiveness of these vaccines to be confident that the agency has been thorough in its assessment of the data,” he added.

Moderna’s vaccine had previously been authorized for use in adults 18 years of age and older, and now includes people 6 months to 17 years of age.

The Pfizer vaccine, on the other hand, provided for vaccination against Covid for children five years of age or older, and now includes babies from 6 months to 4 years old as well.

“As with all vaccines for any population, when authorizing Covid vaccines for pediatric age groups, the FDA ensures that our evaluation and data analysis is rigorous and thorough,” said Peter Marks, director of the Center for Biological Assessment and Research. from the FDA.
