Federal Police seizes R$1 billion from organization that operates in 3 states

This Monday morning (9), the Federal Police carried out Operation Expurgare. It took place in three states (Amazonas, Pernambuco and Rondônia) to combat a criminal organization with capital valued at around R$1 billion. The faction had employees in strategic positions at the Amazonas Environmental Protection Institute (IPAAM).

This is the third phase of investigation, which began with Operation Greenwashing revealing the land fraud scheme that lasted more than a decade and began in Lábrea, in the interior of Amazonas. The action involved analyzes of duplication and forgery of property titles. These falsifications resulted in the illegal appropriation of around 538 thousand hectares of public lands.

IPAAM employees used their positions to facilitate illegal practices, such as issuing fraudulent environmental licenses, suspending fines and irregular authorizations for deforestation. Those investigated had already been indicted in 2019 during Operation Archimedes, which investigated similar crimes.

For three years, the criminal organization increased its illicit activities, reusing property titles and entering false data into the Land Management System, with the help of public servants and technical managers. Between 2016 and 2018, a new expansion of the group’s illicit activities occurred in the Apuí and Nova Aripuanã region, in the interior of Amazonas.

According to the Federal Police, it was possible to seize around R$1 billion that were in possession of the criminal organization. Search and seizure warrants and preventive arrests are being executed, issued by the 7th Federal Criminal Court of the Judiciary Subsection of Manaus/AM, as part of the strategies to dismantle the criminal scheme.
