Fernando Molica: Decision to cancel New Year’s Eve is bad, but prudent

No Freedom of Opinion this Friday (3), Fernando Molica analyzes the decisions of state and city governments to cancel this year’s New Year’s Eve festivities, amid the emergence of the Ômicron variant of Covid-19.

The commentator regrets the cancellation of the parties, but understands that it is the most prudent decision to be taken. “It’s a shame, but these are prudent decisions. In relation to New Year’s Eve and in relation to Carnival, what it was worth back then, the priority is life”, he said.

For Molica, the new variant is still unknown, which increases the risk of holding events that promote agglomerations, despite the economic consequences.

“The emergence of this new strain increases the level of concern. These events can generate a new spike in the pandemic, we are not aware of the degree of transmissibility and severity of this variant, we do not know how effective the vaccines are, there are many questions, and at this time, prudence is always good. We regret it, there are consequences for the parties and there are very serious economic consequences, but prudence is worth it.”

Molica also criticized President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who made comments against the realization of the Carnival festivities.

“Bolsonaro returned to questioning vaccines, but he was always against the reduction of economic activity. He made gatherings, motorcycles, rallies, he always encouraged that. He said that the control of the pandemic should be on the side of the economic movement, and these parties move the economy a lot… this can be done, but that cannot be done”, he said.

“The rules have to prioritize health. The president always needs an antagonism. When he speaks against Carnival, he is waving to the conservative electorate, to evangelicals, he is working on this moral aspect.”
