The film City; Field caused an uproar among students at the Barão do Rio Branco State School, in Macapá (AP), when it was shown during the 14th Cinema and Human Rights Exhibition, produced by the Cinema and Video Department of the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF-Niterói) and carried out by the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship.
The fiction, suspense and drama film has explicit sex scenes and is rated for over 16 years old, according to the Ministry of Justice. The film festival’s website indicates an 18-year-old rating.
A video is circulating online, recorded by school students while watching the film, which shows young people screaming when the nude scenes appear.
The Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship stated that it considers it unacceptable that the film City; Field was shown to public school students. “As soon as it became aware, the Ministry requested the immediate investigation of the facts with the sector of the Universidade Federal Fluminense, responsible for the production of the 14th Edition of the Cinema and Human Rights Exhibition”, he said in a note.
The department declared that it will take the appropriate measures to investigate and hold due responsibility for this fact.
The organization of the 14th Cinema and Human Rights Exhibition recognized the inadequacy of the indicative rating and said that there was an error in assigning the indicative rating to the film. “We sincerely apologize to the school community and the public for what happened. We highlight that there was an error in attributing the indicative rating of the film for this specific session and, based on this episode, an internal reassessment was carried out to adapt it more precisely to its content”, he stated.
He also clarified “that the school and local production in the city of Macapá have no responsibility for what happened” and held meetings with the school management, parents and students.
The governor of the State of Amapá, Clécio Luís, said, in X, that he was “appalled by the film that was shown” to students at the state school and stated that he considered the disrespect for the film’s age rating unacceptable.
City; Field is a Brazilian feature film released this year that addresses migration between urban and rural areas.
