Films released only on streaming will not be eligible for Oscars 2023

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization that annually promotes the Oscars, announced last Wednesday (18) the rules for the candidacy of productions for next year’s awards.

Among the new requirements, the premiere in theaters is again a mandatory – the rule had been suspended during the moments of greatest contagion of Covid-19, due to the closing of theaters worldwide. The measure makes it impossible to apply for films that are only released on streaming platforms.

The “Academy Screening Room” mode, where shorts and features were shown online to Academy members, was closed as “the theaters reopened,” according to the panel of administrators.

Another novelty approved for the 95th edition of the Oscars was the change in the names of the documentary categories, which are now called “Documentary in Feature Film” and “Documentary in Short Film”.

In the “Best Original Song” category, only three songs per film can be submitted for review by the Academy.

The deadlines for submitting applications for the categories vary between the 3rd of October and the 15th of November – the closest for documentaries and international films, and the furthest for the general categories.
