Brazilians and Palestinians who have been in the Gaza Strip since the start of the war between Hamas and Israel must leave the region and arrive in Brazil this weekend.
A CNN spoke with people directly involved in the group’s repatriation and explains what the operation to remove them from the war zone should be like.
The operation has been prepared for more than a month and involves, among other things, checking and rechecking the documents of all members of the group, hiring ground transportation and authorizing the Presidency’s aircraft to land at an Egyptian airport destined for sending humanitarian aid.
Check out the step-by-step guide for Brazilians leaving the Gaza Strip:
When will there be confirmation?
The names of the 34 Brazilians and Palestinians must be confirmed this Friday (10) on the list of foreigners authorized to leave the Gaza Strip, as reported by CNN. The information was confirmed hours later by Itamaraty.
Where are the Brazilians?
The group is divided into two Palestinian cities: 18 are in the border city of Rafah, which connects the Gaza Strip to Egypt; and 16 in Khan Yunis. They will travel on a bus chartered by the Brazilian government to Rafah. From there, the 34 will continue together to Al-Arish.
How will they be transported?
The Presidency of the Republic aircraft designated to rescue the Brazilians is in Cairo. The plane was authorized by the Egyptian government to land at Al-Arish airport, which has been used almost exclusively as a stronghold for international humanitarian aid. There, the aircraft – with a doctor, nurse and psychologist from the FAB – will wait for the group.
When will the exit take place?
The time for crossing the Rafah crossing to the city of Al-Arish has not yet been confirmed. The expectation is that it will take place this Friday morning (10), according to Brazilian authorities involved in the negotiation.
Where will they stay after they leave?
The Brazilians are expected to spend a night in Al-Arish, about 50 kilometers from Gaza, before embarking, on Saturday (11), for Brazil. It will be the first time in weeks that the group will sleep safely.
What will the route be like?
The return route is still being defined. One option is to leave Al-Arish, make a technical stop in Rome, Italy, another in Las Palmas, Spain, and a third in Recife, in Brazil, before arriving in BrasÃlia. Another option evaluated is to leave Al-Arish, make a technical stop in Rome, another in Cape Verde and land in BrasÃlia.
When do they arrive in Brazil?
The Brazilians and the Palestinians accompanying them are expected to arrive on Sunday (12) morning at the BrasÃlia Air Base, where they are expected to be received by President Lula.
