Air quality is at “unhealthy” levels for many parts of Southern California as raging wildfires fill the air with smoke and ash.
Shortly after midnight on Friday, near the Eaton fire, San Marino had an air quality index of 431, according to IQair.
This level is considered quite dangerous, reaching level 6 out of 6 on the air quality index scale.
Air quality advisories are in effect across much of the area, with many neighborhoods exposed to “unhealthy” levels.
University of California epidemiology professor Anne Rimoin previously told CNN that the potential health risks can be dire.
She said fine particles can penetrate deep into the lungs of humans, while poor air quality acutely affects those with chronic conditions, pregnant women and young people.
The Palisades fire between Santa Monica and Malibu in the west of the city and the Eaton fire in the east, near Pasadena, are already classified as the most destructive in the history of Los Angeles, consuming more than 137 km² and turning entire neighborhoods into ashes.
The death toll from the fires rose from seven to 10, the Los Angeles County coroner announced in an update Thursday night.
