First day of Brexit, what changes for Italians

From the first day of January 2021, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is no longer officially part of the European Union. With the agreement reached just a few days ago for the Brexi many of the rules for the management of relations between London and Brussels change, but also a lot of citizens’ lives.

RULES OF TRADE
Between the UK and the EU there is a free trade treaty that is worth 700 billion a year, there are no duties on goods and not even limits on the amount of trade.

Cooperation on crime and security remains. Services are not included in the agreements. British companies forgive the automatic possibility of operating in Europe. There is only one compromise on the issue of fair competition, namely state aid above all, and on fishing in British waters.

IMMIGRATION
Anyone entering the UK must have a visa and already have a job offer with a payment of at least £ 25,600. This does not apply to jobs in sectors that are considered essential as health. Discounts also available for those with a research doctorate (especially in scientific subjects).

You have to prove that you already know the language. So goodbye to the dream of learning English by working as a waiter or doing odd jobs after arriving in the Queen’s homeland. Those who have a specialization and a course of study started has another way. It’s called the “global talent scheme” and it is a points system that will determine who is entitled to a residence permit for work reasons. It will take at least 70 points to enter the UK of which the first fifty will come from three necessary and mandatory requirements: having a job offer from a sponsor recognized by the Home Office, being able to speak English at intermediate level B1 and have an annual salary of not less than 25,600 pounds (except for the health professions, as we have seen).

The other points are obtained in a different way. For those who have a doctorate there are points linked to their work environment (10), but also for those who present themselves for a sector where there is a shortage of personnel (20). There are more points for those who have a high salary and are therefore a required worker with high specialization. No points for those with an annual income of less than 23,039 pounds, 20 only if you exceed 25,600 pounds a year.

TOURISM
You do not need a tourist visa, but a passport is required and you cannot stay for more than three months.

STUDY HOLIDAYS
They can be done with some extra expense. You will need a short visa, passport and health insurance.

STUDENTS
You need a visa (which could be expensive) for students instead. For them, university fees will double, reaching up to 30 thousand euros a year as for non-European students. You must already know the language, have been admitted to a university course (the application must be submitted between 6 and 3 months before the course starts) and be able to pay the tuition. Nothing changes for those who were in Great Britain before December 31st. It will still be possible to do the year abroad, but the costs will be much higher.

ERASMUS
London is no longer part of the Erasmus program. British students will not be able to participate in exchanges and European students will not be able to go to the UK. Great Britain proposes the Alan Turing program which should replace Erasmus worldwide.

FINANCIAL SECTOR
This is not part of the deal and London is losing business in the City and has seen investment funds in the event.

WHO LIVES IN GREAT BRITAIN
European citizens already living in the UK can obtain permanent or provisional resident status. This, the pre-settled status, is valid for 5 years after which it is possible to apply for permanent residence and is valid for people who have lived in the country for less than 5 years.

ROAMING
It will most likely be more expensive to call. Outside the European tariffs (European citizens pay in EU countries according to their own tariff at home), international roaming should return to call the UK and the tariffs could be established by demand and market.
