The Catalan space race gets underway on March 20 when at 07:07, Spanish time, the first nanosatellite of the NewSpace Strategy of Catalonia is launched into space, the project with which the Generalitat wants to relaunch the economy. This first nanosatellite will depart from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, one of the busiest, and starts with the aim of improving connectivity in Catalonia. The Regional Minister of Digital Policies and Public Administration of the Generalitat, Jordi Puigneró, signed contracts this Wednesday for the construction and launch of the first two nano-satellites that the Government will put into orbit, through the companies Sateliot and Open Cosmos.
The Government’s intention is to launch a second nanosatellite at the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022. “This country has to work so that in the future we do not have to give so many dining room scholarships. Projects like this help us,” said the minister who considers that the ‘Catalan Nasa’ will offer more jobs. The project has 18 million euros planned in the project for the next four years, announced at the end of October to launch up to six satellites.
Puinger remarked that in the next five years the 30 companies that make up the sector double, the generation of 1,200 additional jobs and the creation of wealth worth 300 million euros. In addition, digital services will improve from the field of connectivity and climate change. There is no doubt that the Generalitat trusts everything to the stars.
The first nano-satellite, manufactured and launched by Sateliot, will be sent into space to provide connectivity in the field of the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G, and has an investment of 574,000 euros. Open Cosmos will be the winning company for the manufacture of the second nano satellite, with an investment of 1.7 million euros. Both will be operated from the Montsec Astronomical Park (Lleida) and will receive a name that will be decided by boys and girls through a contest on the TV3 InfoK program.
