Five dead in strong earthquake in Tajikistan

Five people were killed in a magnitude 5.9 earthquake shook the eastern city of Dushanbe this morning. Tajikistan, according to the authorities of this Central Asian country.

“The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at 07:14 local time (05:14 Greek time) was located 165 kilometers northeast of Dushanbe. “Five people lost their lives,” the press service of the country’s emergency response committee said.

“Dozens of houses were destroyed,” he added.

According to the government-run Khovar news agency, which cited the country’s science academy, earthquake was 5.9 degrees and its focal depth was estimated at 10 km.

The emergency response committee said the dead were residents of a village in Tajikistan. “Homes and power grids were partially damaged” in three villages in the area, 220 km east of Dushanbe.

Tajik President Imomali Rakhmon has ordered the establishment of a commission of inquiry led by the prime minister, Russian media reported.
