Five (valid) reasons to watch the Super Bowl

An event, a liturgy, a show, probably the biggest in the sports circus. Sunday 7 February, the 55th edition of the SuperBowl. The direct free-to-air TV in Italy is Rai 2, and for us it is already Monday 8 starting from 15 minutes after midnight; Paid is on DAZN starting at 11.55pm. Opposite the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Boys Buccaneers. Question: How many of us really know the rules of American football? Answer: it doesn’t matter. What counts is the charm of a special challenge, despite the pandemic.

It is played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, full due to a pandemic for one third of the capacity: only 22,000 spectators compared to the 66,000 seats available. Here are 5 reasons not to miss the challenge of the year.

1) Because it embodies the American Dream
American football is a constant frontier to be conquered, and there is nothing more American. The sense of the team, the greatness of the gesture of the individual player: the Super Bowl is played in a single game, the only act of the novel. The emotion is concentrated, it is not diluted in a series like in basketball, baseball, hockey. All in one night, like in a movie.

2) For the challenge between the King and the New Prince
On the one hand, the King: Tom Brady, 43, a living legend, tenth final, six Super Bowl wins (all with the Patrios). On the other hand, the Prince who dreams of picking up the crown from the ground and lowering it on his head: Patrick Mahomes, 25, quaterback from Kansas City, new face of the NFL, two headlines. When Brady played his first Super Bowl – in 2002 – to win the MVP title, Mahomes was six. Their head-to-head tally is 2-2 so far. From Sunday one of the two will look down on the other.

3) For Tom Brady’s 37 glasses of water a day
And for other little great legends of the greatest quaterback ever. One of the many: always go to bed before 9.30pm. Californian, Catholic, admired for his loyalty, handsome, successful, loyal, courageous in dealing with his frailty (in Michigan to fight anxiety and frustration he got help from a psychologist), fearless and insatiable, married since 2009 with the Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen, two children. He will be featured in an upcoming ESPN series.

4) Because in addition to the game there is the interval
The SuperBowl interval is a show within a show. Pure pleasure for the eyes. Everything is designed for television dynamics, the fact remains that everything is «Bigger than Life». This year it’s the turn of superstar Miley Cyrus (for sure there will be the hits of Plastic Hearts) and Canadian artist The Weeknd, who released the video clip of Save Yoour Tears. Last year the Halftime Show was Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s moment: will Miley Cyrus and The Weeknd be able to overcome them?

5) Because the world looks at it
The SuperBowl is the sporting event of the year (peak of 148.5 million viewers last year), broadcast in 180 countries. The whole planet is glued to the TV, in the last two years there have been an average of 220 million social interactions. Sponsors who previously spent up to $ 5 million on 30 seconds of commercials this year – between economic crisis and pandemic – they reversed. But the charm remains. This year there is also an extra female side: Sarah Thomas is the first female referee and Lori Locust is part of the Buccaneers coaching staff.
