The city of Pelotas recorded hailstorms in areas located amid flooding resulting from heavy rains in May in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. CNN obtained images of the climatic event.
Images recorded by student and rural producer Marck Quevedo Sastre show ice stones falling on the place where he was with friends in the early evening of this Wednesday (22).
“We had arrived from the rescue team, it was around five o'clock, it was calm there, the kids were at the edge of the fire to dry off until, out of nowhere, we started to see thunder. After a while it started to rain and there were some small hailstones, little pellets”, he says.
“[…] Some thick stones, they looked like golf balls”, he adds. The incidence of hailstones was already predicted by the state's Civil Defense.
“The hail was well localized. The hailstorm in Pelotas was in Laranjal and the Areal neighborhood. There was a record about Pelotas airport. The possibility of hail was forecast on Tuesday [21]”, says Climatempo meteorologist, Josélia Pegorim.
“Hail is ice stones that form in the highest part (and coldest, with temperatures tens of degrees below 0°C) of cumulonimbus clouds. These are the clouds that are forming in the area south of Rio Grande do Sul. In addition to heavy rain and strong winds, these clouds can also cause hail”, she adds.
The city of Pelotas remains flooded after the rains that affected Rio Grande do Sul throughout the month of May.
They affect the city in the south of the state at a time when Pelotas is trying to contain and get rid of the floods.
