Gabriel Medina 30, dominated social media after beating the Japanese surfer Kanoa Igarashi ! Three years after being eliminated by his rival in the semifinals of the Tokyo Olympics, the Brazilian turned the game around to the joy of our nation.
Excited to see the first Japanese being eliminated by one of our athletes, the web rescued publications by Kanoa, in 2021, mocking Medina’s defeat. “Cry cry because I’m happy,” the surfer wrote in Portuguese at the time.
The highly anticipated competition was also marked by a historic feat by Gabriel Medina! After catching an (almost) perfect tube, the Brazilian received a score of 9.90, the highest in the history of Olympic surfing.
Another highlight was the curious way the surfer chose to exit the waves. When finishing the tubes, Medina simply jumped off the board, giving the impression of flying over the sea — and resulting in one of the most striking photos of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
