Food collection 2022: what can we donate to help those in need?

Since the beginning of the year, 85,000 more requests have been received, bringing the number of people helped by the structures to 1,750,000 Food bank. In the latest Caritas Poverty Report, the data for 2021 says that there are 5.6 million absolute poor people in Italy. And it’s not just them who turn to the approximately 7,600 structures that the Banco Alimentare supports throughout Italy through the network of 21 local organizations for shopping or a meal. On Saturday 26 November, the food collection directly helps these associations.

“We are concerned about the situation we are seeing in our country with more and more people and families who find themselves in absolute poverty or who risk slipping into it despite having a job”, explains Giovanni Bruno, president of the Banco Alimentare Onlus Foundation – “it is therefore essential continue to raise awareness of all those who can carry out a concrete act of help. The Food Collection is a simple educational gesture of charity, which we have been promoting for over a quarter of a century. Participating in this initiative means countering indifference and encouraging sharing, making a concrete gesture to which we are all invited”.

With Giorgio Chiellini as a testimonial for the second consecutive year, over 140,000 volunteers wearing orange bibs will be in 11,000 supermarkets to invite people to buy and donate food products. They deliver the bags and indicate the products which are then placed in the trolleys after the checkouts.

Which products

You have to buy long-life products: canned vegetables, tuna and canned meat, tomato pulp or puree, oil, baby food such as homogenized, creamed rice or powdered milk.

The food donated will then be distributed to around 7,600 partnered charitable structures (soup kitchens, family homes, communities for minors, counseling centres, street units) which support around 1,700,000 people.

The results of 2021

14 million meals were donated. In 2021, thanks to the Food Collection, 7,000 tons of food were collected, the equivalent of 14 million meals (1 equivalent meal corresponds to a mix of 500 g of food based on LARN, the Reference Intake Levels of Nutrients and Energy for the Italian population) for an economic value of over 25 million euros.

Collection online

From 26 November 2022, the Colletta Alimentare will also continue online. In fact, it will be possible to continue donating food on Amazon.it/bancoalimentare, Carrefour.it, Esselungaacasa.it and EasyCoop.com. To find out about the various methods of purchasing products and the points of sale participating in the initiative, it is possible to consult the website food collection.
