Forest fires in Quebec threaten maximum security prison, 225 inmates evacuated

A maximum-security prison in Canada has been evacuated under the threat of forest fires raging in Quebec. Authorities have ordered the removal of approximately 225 inmates, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) announced Sunday. The order to evacuate the Port Cartier prison was issued on Friday and the inmates were safely transferred to other penitentiaries, CSC said without elaborating on the operation. The regional service for the protection of forests against forest fires (SOPFEU) said lightning was responsible for seven fires that broke out north of Port Cartier, two of which were raging out of control on Friday. The Correctional Service of Canada emphasizes that it is monitoring developments and will consider when it will be possible to reopen the maximum security prison in order to give the green light for the transfer of prisoners.
