Former Libyan diplomat jailed for seven years – “Misused public funds”

Seven years in prison was imposed on a former ambassador of Libya in Brussels who is accused of corruption in the performance of her duties, as announced yesterday by the public prosecutor’s office. A Tripoli court convicted former diplomat Amal Gerari for “actions” aimed at “securing illegal privileges”, “abuse of public funds” and for harming “the public interest”, the prosecution explained via Facebook. She was also fined “double the amounts she misused”, according to the same source. Ms Gerari was ousted by government order after a scandal erupted over the leaking of an incriminating audio message on social networking sites.
