Envisioning a new wave of Covid-19 hospitalizations, due to the Ômicron variant, The National Forum of Governors tries to extend with the federal government the accreditation of specialized beds for the treatment of patients infected by the coronavirus. The contract that provides surplus beds to the states by the Ministry of Health ends on the 31st.
The negotiations are headed by the governor of Piauí and president of the Forum of Governors, Wellington Dias. On the side of the federal government, those at the forefront of the talks are the Chief of Staff, Ciro Nogueira and the executive secretary of the Ministry of HealthRodrigo Cruz.
The expectation is that the measure will be extended until February 2022. In a note, the Ministry of Health reported that it is studying the extension of cost to 14,254 thousand ICU beds Covid-19 Adult and Pediatric for another 30 days for the whole country.
The new contract extension, according to Wellington Dias, is related to the increase in cases of Covid-19 and hospitalizations in Brazil in recent weeks. To support his arguments, the governor cites data from the most recent newsletter of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), which points to an increase in the demand for beds in several states of the country.
“We already have seven states with 70% or more of the capacity of beds occupied, for acute and severe respiratory diseases (Covid-19, notably variant Ômicron and H3N2/Influenza), in addition to viruses and diarrhea). And other states in a situation of increase in the level of occupation in other areas. This is generating a demand in the area of hospitalization”, highlighted Wellington Dias.
The Ministry of Health will reopen 400 beds in the city of Rio de Janeiro. There are 250 new vacancies at the Federal Hospital of Bonsucesso and another 150 at Clementino Fraga Filho, according to the municipal secretary of Health of Rio de Janeiro, Daniel Soranz.
