Four people were shot dead aboard a train near Chicago on Monday morning (2), police said.
“The victims were all passengers on this morning’s train,” Forest Park Deputy Chief Chris Chin said. “The train was moving on its way to Forest Park.”
A suspect is in custody, and police believe the case is isolated.
“There is no immediate threat and this appears to be an isolated incident on this unfortunate day,” Chin said.
Investigators are working with the Chicago Transit Authority to review surveillance footage. Police believe the shootings took place in two train cars.
Police said surveillance video was key to identifying the suspect, who was arrested about an hour and a half after the shooting. Police also recovered a firearm.
“While this was an isolated incident, this heinous and egregious act of violence should never have occurred, especially on a public transport train,” the transit authority said in a statement.
Police did not release information about the victims, but said their next of kin were being notified.
“This is obviously shocking, you know, it’s unusual to have a mass shooting like this,” Chin said.
“This is an isolated incident, so it could happen anywhere. Obviously there is a little bit more concern because it is on a public transport system,” he added.
There have been 377 mass shootings in the United States so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which, like the CNN, defines a mass shooting as one with four or more victims, not including the shooter.
There were an average of “1.5” mass shootings per day in the US in 2024.
